The group will be split into teams of 3 members. Each team will discuss about the different elements that are used to design a network (hubs, routers, cables, computers, servers, printers, modems, etc.). The assignment consist on designing a Network for the following situations:
1. First year: You are about to open a music and video store at Valle Oriente. Create a network to register all the transactions and to print the receipts and invoices for the clients. You have space for 2 cashiers and it is also important to control the inventory. Do a diagram using Paint to represent the network.
2. One year later: The business is running very well so you decide to open a branch at Paseo San Pedro. It is very important for the business to have both stores communicated to control the inventory, that’s why you decide to implement another network at the new store and link it to the first one. Do a diagram using Paint for the second store network and link both stores. Label each network part.
3. After 3 years: You are about to open a new shop at Madrid, Spain, and you need to connect the three stores: Do a diagram using Paint for the third store and link both stores. Label each network part.
One student will design the first network and pass the design to a second member. The second member will construct the design for the second year and pass it to the third member. The third member will ask for approval of the design to the other members. Every member should upload the design individually in their Students Edublog.

Activity 3

Simulating my network

Check the following site http://www.linksys.com/flash/learn_networking/1_1.html and then,

1. Check the following link: http://www.teach-ict.com/as_a2/topics/networks/networkswf/NWB_SIM.swf
2. Follow the steps of the link and practice creating a network.
3. To learn how this works do the simulation practice first.
4. Simulate you own network
5. Once you finish use Print Screen option in your computer and copy and paste the diagram in a word documents Upload your network simulation in your edublog.
6. Go to Discussion forum and share your experience and results with your group
7. Students should post between 3- 5 comments in the teachers edublog

Activity 4

My transmission speed

Sm2 Network Connections
View SlideShare presentation or Upload your own. (tags: course)

Each student will download a heavy file (Test.mov) located in Teachers Edublog and will measure the download time.

They must download the file using wireless and using twisted pair cables and write down the file size and how much time it took to download.
Individually, the student will research online resources to create a written report that will answer to the following:
1. How does file transmission speed relates to the physical transmission media? Which is the fastest? Which is the most reliable?
Up load your written report in your student edublog

Activity 5

Real life Practice

Choose a business that you can visit to get information about the type of network and connections used in that place. The business can be either an office or a store. The only requisite is that it must have a computer network.
You will actually visit the place and ask the manager to explain all information about the network used.
Using the gathered information and the knowledge about networks, write a written report including the following: Description of the business, Hardware, Transmission Media, Diagram of the network, Type of connection, glossary and your conclusion.

Activity 6

Final Reflection

Students should write a final reflection of what they have learned during the course. The reflection should be about network and blogs.
